Updated: Banker's committee takes over National Theatre, Lagos

The Federal Government on Sunday 12th July 2020 officially handed over the National Theatre Complex to the Central Bank of Nigeria and other Banks under the aegis of the Bankers’ Committee, in order to commence the renovation of the facility.



The handover was attended by the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele; Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Sunday Dare; Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; the CEO, Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his deputy and other top officials in the state government.


The handover was targeted at renovating the complex, ensuring continued employment of its stafe and also create new employment opportunities for the youths by providing a state-of-the-art facility with improved ICT infrastructure, music, fashion and development of commercial and retail facilities, among others.


The CBN stated that the "Facility will help in unleashing the creative talents of Nigeria’s youths across multiple sectors and in supporting Mr.President's objective of creating new employment opportunities for Nigerians."

"Some 6,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, while the completed project could generate up to an additional 600 permanent and 2000 to 3000 call-on/call-off jobs. This is as good as it gets!" according to Minister of Information and Culture Alh. Lai Mohammed and be able to support skills acquisition and job creation for over 1 million Nigerians over the next five years.
